What Changed in Claude Opus 4.8

Opus 4.8 builds on Opus 4.7 (released April 16, 2026) with targeted improvements. The pricing stays the same: $5 per million input tokens, $25 per million output tokens. The API string is claude-opus-4-8.

Here is what matters for anyone running AI agents in GoHighLevel:

Honesty improvements. Opus 4.8 is less likely to make unsupported claims and more likely to flag its own uncertainty. For an AI agent that talks to your customers, replies to leads, or handles inbound calls, this is the most important upgrade. An agent that says "I'm not sure, let me connect you with a team member" is infinitely better than one that confidently gives wrong information.

Stronger agentic performance. Opus 4.8 handles longer autonomous sessions more reliably. Early testers report sharper judgment on multi-step agentic tasks. If your Agent Studio workflows chain multiple decisions together (qualify a lead, check availability, book an appointment, send a confirmation), the model is better at staying on track through the full sequence.

Effort controls. A new setting lets you (or the system) adjust how much reasoning effort the model applies per task. Higher effort means deeper thinking on complex queries. Lower effort means faster responses and lower token usage on simple ones. GHL's integration surfaces the model you select, so when Opus 4.8 processes a Voice AI call, the effort-control behavior comes along with it.

Fast mode is 3x cheaper. Opus 4.8's fast mode runs at roughly 2.5x the standard speed and now costs three times less than fast mode on previous Opus models. For high-volume Voice AI calls where response latency matters, this makes the faster tier more practical.

On knowledge work tasks (GDPval-AA), it scored 1890, above both GPT-5.5 and its predecessor. These numbers matter less than real-world agent behavior, but they confirm the model is competitive at the frontier.

How GoHighLevel Uses Claude

GoHighLevel supports three external AI model providers: Google Gemini, OpenAI GPT, and Anthropic Claude. You select the provider and specific model when configuring Voice AI or Agent Studio.

This is worth being clear about: Claude is one option among three. GoHighLevel is not a "Claude-powered" platform. It is a platform that lets you choose which model powers your AI features, and Claude is one of the choices. The right model depends on your use case, budget, and the kind of conversations your agents handle.

Where you can select Claude:

• Voice AI: Claude models (currently Claude 4.5 Sonnet, Claude 4.0 Sonnet, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Haiku) are available as external model options for inbound and outbound AI voice calls. The model handles the conversation logic while GHL's voice engine manages speech-to-text and text-to-speech.
• Agent Studio: Claude is available as one of the model options for custom AI agents you build in the visual canvas. Agent Studio is an AI Employee Plus feature and is billed pay-per-use based on model token consumption. It is not included in the AI Employee Unlimited subscription.
• Conversation AI: When billed pay-per-use, you can select Claude models alongside GPT and Gemini options for text-based AI conversations.

Tier requirement: Agent Studio is an AI Employee Plus feature. It is not included in the $97/month AI Employee Unlimited plan. Voice AI inbound is included in AI Employee Unlimited, but external model usage (choosing Claude, GPT, or Gemini instead of the default) is billed at the selected provider's token rates on top of the base subscription.

How to Set Claude as Your Model

Setting Claude as your AI model in GoHighLevel takes a few clicks:

For Voice AI:

1. Open your sub-account in GoHighLevel
2. Navigate to Settings, then Voice AI
3. In the model configuration section, select Anthropic as the provider
4. Choose your Claude model (Claude 4.5 Sonnet for the strongest reasoning, Claude 3.5 Haiku for faster and cheaper responses)
5. Save the configuration

Your Voice AI agent will now use Claude for conversation logic. Billing shifts to Anthropic's token rates for the selected model. GHL's Voice Engine and TTS costs apply separately.

For Agent Studio:

1. Open Agent Studio from the AI section of your sub-account
2. Create a new agent or edit an existing one
3. In the agent's model settings, select Anthropic Claude as the LLM
4. Configure your agent's tools, knowledge bases, and workflow as usual
5. Deploy the agent

Agent Studio usage is pay-per-use regardless of your AI Employee plan. Token costs are based on the selected model's rates.

Claude and GoHighLevel via MCP

GoHighLevel runs an official MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that lets Claude (or any MCP-compatible AI client) interact directly with your GHL account through natural language.

The MCP endpoint is https://services.leadconnectorhq.com/mcp/. Once connected via a Private Integration Token, Claude can:

• Read and search contacts
• View and update pipeline opportunities
• Check calendar availability and book appointments
• Send SMS messages and emails
• Access conversation history
• Manage blog posts and social media

This is different from selecting Claude as your Voice AI or Agent Studio model. The MCP connection lets you use Claude (through Claude Desktop, Claude Code, or any MCP client) as an operator that works inside your GHL account. Think of it as giving Claude hands inside your CRM.

Claude vs GPT vs Gemini for Your GHL Agents

This is the section that matters most. All three model families work inside GoHighLevel. The question is which one fits your specific agents.

Choose Claude when:

• Your agents handle complex, multi-step conversations (lead qualification chains, detailed service explanations, nuanced objection handling). Claude tends to produce more natural conversational responses with fewer robotic patterns.
• Accuracy matters more than speed. Claude Opus 4.8's honesty improvements mean it is more likely to acknowledge uncertainty rather than fabricate answers, which is critical for agents talking to real customers.
• You need strong reasoning through long interactions. Agent Studio workflows that chain decisions benefit from Claude's agentic reliability.

Choose GPT when:

• You need the broadest ecosystem compatibility. OpenAI models have the longest history of third-party tool integration and the largest developer community.
• You are already invested in the OpenAI ecosystem (custom GPTs, fine-tuned models, existing prompts optimized for GPT behavior).
• Cost efficiency at scale matters. GPT-5 Mini and GPT-4.1 Mini offer strong performance at lower token rates than Claude Sonnet models.

Choose Gemini when:

• Cost is the primary constraint. Gemini 2.5 Flash Lite at $0.10 per million tokens is dramatically cheaper than any Claude or GPT model. For high-volume, simpler interactions (appointment confirmations, basic FAQ responses), Gemini keeps costs minimal.
• You want fast responses with low latency. Gemini Flash models are optimized for speed.
• Your agents handle straightforward, template-driven conversations where the depth of Claude or GPT reasoning is not necessary.

The honest answer: There is no universally "best" model for GoHighLevel. An agency running high-value sales calls might justify Claude Sonnet's premium for better conversation quality. A dental office confirming appointments might get identical results from Gemini Flash at a fraction of the cost. Test with your actual prompts and conversation flows before committing.

Pricing Reality

Running Claude inside GoHighLevel involves layered costs. Be clear-eyed about this before switching.

Claude's model rates (via GHL):

GHL's external Voice AI model pricing for Anthropic Claude models ranges from $0.80 per million tokens (Claude 3.5 Haiku) to $3.00 per million tokens (Claude 4.5 Sonnet and Claude 4.0 Sonnet). These rates apply to Voice AI usage billed through GHL. Agent Studio and Conversation AI may have different rate structures based on separate input/output token pricing.

On top of model costs, you pay:

• Your GHL plan ($97 Starter, $297 Unlimited, or $497 SaaS Pro)
• AI Employee Unlimited ($97/month per sub-account) if you want included Voice AI inbound
• Voice Engine and TTS costs for Voice AI calls (per-minute rates)
• Phone system charges for calls
• Agent Studio usage (pay-per-use, not covered by AI Employee Unlimited)

Compared to other models: Claude Sonnet models sit at the premium end of GHL's external model pricing. Gemini Flash models are 10-30x cheaper per token. GPT models fall in between. The question is whether Claude's conversation quality justifies the premium for your specific use case.

Honest Limitations

Being straightforward about what this integration does and does not do:

• Model selection is feature-specific. You can choose Claude for Voice AI, Agent Studio, and Conversation AI. Not every AI feature in GoHighLevel lets you pick the external model. Content AI, Reviews AI, and Ask AI use their own model configurations.
• Agent Studio is pay-per-use. Even with AI Employee Unlimited, Agent Studio usage is billed separately. If you are building complex multi-tool agents on Claude, token costs add up quickly.
• GHL may not immediately surface Opus 4.8. The Claude models currently listed in GHL's pricing documentation are Claude 4.5 Sonnet, Claude 4.0 Sonnet, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Haiku. Anthropic has released Opus 4.8, but GHL's model selection may take time to update. Check your GHL model picker for the latest available options.
• Token costs compound in Voice AI. Voice AI calls involve voice engine costs, TTS costs, and LLM token costs. A single five-minute call can consume significant tokens. Model this before scaling.
• MCP is not the same as model selection. Selecting Claude in Voice AI means GHL routes calls through Claude's API. Using the MCP server means connecting an external Claude client to your GHL data. These are two separate capabilities.
